Details of what happens during your visit and consultation
My Second Opinion includes review of all appropriate medical and other records, images, and slides prior to the consultation, an interview with the patient and family, and examination of the patient. We then discuss together the vital and important treatment and management ideas and alternatives that apply to the specific situation. Certain key literature may be referenced or actually supplied, as appropriate. No treatment of any kind will be given, and no continuing care is planned. My role is to provide a single event of advice and consultation, and I will not ``take over'' the care of anyone. It is of course possible that I might be requested to look at the situation again, in a similar consultation, six months or a year later, for the same purpose, but this does not change the entirely consultative nature of my interaction. Since it is very important for me to know how you are doing in future years, I will ask you and your physician to keep me up-to-date, and may call you from time to time, with your permission, to check on things.
Although I request payment at the time of service, I will assist you in recovering insurance reimbursement for the patient whenever possible. Second opinions are being increasingly accepted by health care payers and insurance companies. In fact there are efforts being made to make second opinions an ordinary and standard part of the treatment pathway. So that I may be prepared for a complete and extensive discussion during your visit, and since I will often wish to conduct research on new and novel treatments for you ahead of time, I request that you send me the medical records and case materials prior to your visit. In this way I can be fully prepared to help you and to answer your questions.
